Mathematics and Operational Research Department

Welcome on the homepage of the Mathematics and Operational Research!

Mathematics and Operational Research (MathRO) is one of the three departments dealing with Computer Science and Management within the Faculty of Engineering, which is part of the University of Mons (UMONS), Belgium.

MathRO's research activities cover fields such as:

  • multiple criteria decision analysis and multi-objective optimization
  • data mining
  • applications of combinatorial optimization to production scheduling and logistics
  • numerical resolution of partial differential equations.

This department teaches mathematics both at undergraduate and graduate levels, with operational research, optimization, statistics and numerical analysis.

Currently composing the team are professors, assistants, senior researchers and doctoral students.

On this website, you will find further informations on our research activities and an overview of the courses you can attend at UMONS.

Address: UMONS / FPMs, 9, rue de Houdain 7000 Mons.

Analysing, modelling and optimizing are the focal points of the activities we have been developing for over twenty years.  Besides fundamental research, we have been and are still involved in numerous projects and industrial contracts. These have been executed for various companies from miscellaneous sectors such as chemical, pharmaceutical, mechanical and steel industries, mining, energy production, transport and logistics sector, public services and organisations.

Our scientific production contributes to three of the Research Centers of the Faculté Polytechnique of Mons:

  • Information technologies Research Center: topic "Information Processing"

In this framework, we develop our expertise regarding multi-objective optimization, analysing and exploiting non-statistical data analysis (preferences, expert qualitative judgments, for instance) and accounting for imprecision in decision processes with multiple criteria and/or multiple experts. Very diverse tools and techniques are used ranging from data mining to fuzzy logic and from optimization to multiple criteria decision analysis.

By our involvement in many case studies and contracts, we have developed a great expertise in the conception and the implementation of solutions to production scheduling problems as well as logistics and transportation problems.

  • Risks Research Center: topic "Risk management"

Multiple criteria decision analysis, methods for taking into account uncertainty, risk assessment methods are developed in the framework of this research center.

  • BioSys Research Center: topic "Bioprocess: design and control"

Our research related to the numerical resolution of partial differential equations contributes to this research center. The tools being developed are applied to various domains, in particular to biological systems.
